My clown encounter

I was talking to someone about the Camp Pining Hearts graphic novel on Reddit, and among other things, I made a joking comment about how Mr. Frowney appearing in the audience of the Camp Pining Play to watch Mr. Smiley perform might mean they’re married now. Someone in the comments had this to say to me:

That would imply that anyone on SU cares about developing characters.

Follow the jump if you would like some bloviating about how this show fails at complex relationships, a funny conspiracy theory about how fan response directly controls which characters appear and what plots the Crew writes, and a smug conclusion that No One Can Answer This Deep Question and Therefore SU Is A Bad Show.

It’s clear that the author is trying to prop up their ship by purposefully making Amedot out to be unhealthy and problematic, even if it means derailing established personality and history. It’s pretty childish really.

I have no personal stake in whether a rare character appears again--I'm not yearning for either of those people to return--but it's straight-up weird to say someone will never show up again because they only showed up once.

Then again, I remember how confident people were that Bismuth would never return (and how consistently they coupled their absolute certainty with sneering comments about how the voice actor was surely too expensive), so I guess it's not too surprising to me that some folks still think certain characters are guaranteed to never return. Bottom line is you never know when the throwaway mailman character in episode 3 will turn out to be a regularly returning character starting in episode 56. It just doesn't make sense to pretend such things are obvious. You do not know.

As for the continued weirdness of claiming that this group of characters has no character dynamics to speak of, I mean, it's literally one of the things I've appreciated the most all along about the show, and . . . I don't have to exaggerate or read into what I see to find it, nor am I confused about whether it's actually there. I again have no personal stake in whether you feel that way. It just strikes me as a bizarro world kind of comment. You're having a VERY different experience of this show from the one I've had.

That’s different. Bismuth was brought back thanks to fan demand. Meanwhile, these are specifically one off characters, especially considering the show’s halfway over. Not everyone can rise above a one shot character.

And can you name any notable character dynamics not attached to Steven? Compare that to say Adventure Time which had great character dynamics.

It's really weird that you think Bismuth was brought back because fans "demanded" it. You don't know how the show works at all. 

And "then name character dynamics not attached to Steven" is a bizarre request. If you truly did not see the literal thousands of years of history between characters that enhanced who they are and how they act long before Steven was there, me trotting them out isn't going to help you believe it's there. Steven being the strict point of view character creates a situation that Adventure Time doesn't have, so it's weird to expect the show to diverge significantly from the lens it's designed to be viewed through, but believing you've presented a gotcha here is basically admitting you haven't noticed any of the relationships between the characters that Steven actually spent a ton of time discovering--whole episodes were even dedicated to relationships between characters who aren't Steven or aren't relating to Steven when they're revealing such things. It's not even subtext.

Well after fan backlash from the episodes Bismuth, they basically had no choice but to bring her back. And given how expensive the VA is, it hurt their budget. And really, what relationships? The whole thing revolves around Steven. The Gems are Steven’s moms, Connie is Steven’s love interest, the town is Steven’s friends. The only interesting dynamic is Lars hating Steven and even then he joined the Steven cult. Look how wasted Lapis and Peridot became when they escaped Steven’s clutches.

Wow. Your obliviousness and misplaced confidence is baffling, but . . . to be honest I feel like I'm watching someone who doesn't understand they're embarrassing themselves, and it's getting uncomfortable.

I know that you don't know what's going on behind the scenes of this show, but it is really bizarre sometimes that fans believe their behavior and their outrage is changing the writing or influencing what characters they use.

You really think fans raging about things is an actual "demand" they respond to. That they "had to" bring back Bismuth because of something FANS DID. Yikes. But I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that people are still saying things like this. Some people still think the writers stole plot elements from fan theories. I don't know why some people in fandoms think they're that important or relevant. The show is not being controlled by our responses in any way. If "fan backlash" worked to bring characters back, there are many others who would have returned long ago. 

And isn't that lovely, you've got a little conspiracy theory about how paying the scads of money you imagine are required for Bismuth's voice actor have "hurt the budget" (oblivious to how many voice actors on this show have done more episodes despite being more famous/having higher net worth). You clearly have zero clue about how any of this works, and you shouldn't keep pretending you have knowledge about it, especially not while talking to people who do.

As for relationships, you're not really asking me. Like I said, if I wasted my time trotting out descriptions of relationship dynamics that you should have seen for yourself if you watched the show, there's no way that would convince you they were worthwhile, well-developed relationships if the show itself didn't. I see complex and multifaceted relationships, growth, change, conflict, and resolution, in so many relationships, like Greg and Rose figuring out what love is to them, Ruby and Sapphire growing into a healthier version of who they are together, Pearl learning to think independently of serving Rose even as she struggles with her nature, the long history of Pearl with Garnet, Amethyst with Pearl, even Greg with Amethyst (all things Steven has to discover and understand only partially as the show goes on) . . . but if you truly believe characters in this show who existed before Steven appeared 14 years ago have shown no evidence of having layered relationship dynamics that do not focus on him or depend on him, I don't know what show you're watching and I can't help you.

I don't know why you're even here since just about every bit of content you've posted here is "the thing you like sucks" and completely unsupported comments about why, sourced in nothing. It's just like . . . not even an argument, it's just a weird demonstration that you don't get what's going on so you've concluded nothing is. It's weird, and normally I've got no problem with criticism or spirited discussion, but these comments are just . . . they're empty. They're demonstrations of obliviousness or willful ignorance. It's just so, so weird to talk to someone who thinks they're laying down critical points but reads as so ignorant of what even happened in the source material or behind the scenes.

For the record, this person was going on in other threads about how Amedot is better than Lapidot “objectively” and partly because “it looks cuter,” saying the writing on the entire series is garbage, that “Steven as a character doesn’t make sense,” and that the show’s writers have no standards. Wow edgy.

And I would consider the following on the writers stealing fan content; keep in mind that Rose being Pink Diamond was a widely circulated fan theory and people were very stubborn about it. It could be that the crew felt like they needed to validate them. This lead to them to an unsatisfying and out of left field twist.

And I simply don’t see the powerful character interactions people brag about. What’s the character dynamics of the Gems? Again, the blog post I posted is the gotcha moment that no can answer.

I reiterate that the blog post referenced here is one sentence, and it says, “For a show that revolves around a group of characters, SU doesn’t have very interesting group dynamics writing (when they bother having them at all).” That is this person’s “gotcha.” That is this person’s “NO ONE CAN SATISFACTORILY ANSWER THIS” criticism.

I wish i could draw for them all. For now though, we’ll make due with a list, in no particular order. it’s juice and jam time.

So firsty to start it all off 1. Papa Rappa and General Potter - even though they arent teachers im just countin em because yknow theyre adults. I like em together a lot, and even considered writing my own thing for it (i never did post the art of them together) yet ONLY if Sloane ‘Phoenix’ Rappa were out of the picture somehow! Otherwise the two doggos bein together are good 💝

2. Mooselini y Cheap Cheap - something that always makes me interest in a pair at first is cute art, usually. I like em together and think its adorable :’3 ive even thought of scenarios for em, that maaaybee could be developed into a fic. Maybe

3. Fleaswallow/Cheap Cheap - look ive been a fan of the weird headcanon of ‘The chicken is a convict’ and think itd be great for this one. Theyd smonk weed and plan new ways to sell their stuff together

4. Mushi or Guru Ant/ Takoyama - hehe the octopus has a thing for invertebrates :P i obviously like him with Mushi, but ive warmed up a lot to him bein with Guru Ant as well 💜 fan favorites gettin paired togetherr

5. Captain Fussenpepper y Cathy Pillar - man these two always get buried and forgotten overall... but i think them old farts would be really cuute togetherr 😻 theyd go on cute dates in their golden years and stuff,,, and Cathy would be able to handle him at his best and worst thanks to her nursing experience

6. Teriyaki Yoko and Paul Chuck - i think it hilarious how they were goin on a dinner date in the newer anime and it makes sense too; only a man as tough and off his rocker as him would like the demon of the maybe-hell place

7. Beard Burger with his wife, End of that wholesome story.

8. this aint exactly a pair since naaah, but ive always really liked the idea of Takoyama and Cheap Cheapp bein buds. Theyd hangout and talk shit about the other and have a gay old time ❤️️🧡💛💚💙💜 ive been meaning to draw it for the longest time, but i havent yet

9. Talking about Takoyama, i heard an idea somewhere about he and Moosesha bein together 🤔 of course thats a slim idea right there, but i still like it! ^.^ most likely has to do with them bein total opposites is all 💗 ive always loved that trope

10. And finaallyyy Colonel Noodle, who obviously the best to be paired with him would be a piping hot bowl of ramen moodles :v but Really, i see lotsa cute ideas, the ones i like mostest being of him with PaRappa or Rammy~

and thaaats the teacherss of the series, i guess uh. Onwards to the ‘other series’ shipsssss. Itll be a random handful-ish that i come up with on the top of my head. imma try and keep it shorter as well this post is already MUCH TOO LONG

1. startin off this series with Naruhina because i like it as much as Parapp and Lams 💖 -from the Naruto series

They inspire and help each other out so much and hhhhh needless to say im extremely happy with how the series progressed 😻😻 like unbelievably happy, i have to hurry up and watch it all and squee over it

2. Ive super duper liked marceline/princess bubblegum ever since that one episode clearly hinted at feelings in that one episode with the witch and the shirt and the kitty alarm clock that i need 💗 - from Adventure Time

they like each otherrr, they have for a whiile, so imagine my excitement when certain things happen in AT, which has ended recently :’S i seriously have to rewatch and marathon the show to see it myself

3. Deku and Ocharaka. Uraka, CHOCOLATE im so terrible at remembering their names :’D 💔💝 - from My Hero Academia

i just recently started watchin BNHA and i gotta say, i adore it and i adore these two 😻 it just so cute,,,, seein em interact on screen is so adorable in itself, i gotta keep watching to catch up on the series because i love it overall

4. And for something from a series not so sweet and fluffyyy, Bubba/Leatherface and Stretch, whichever her last and real name is because i keep forgetting iittt 💓💖 - from TCM2

This movie is the first in the series that i’ve watched (ive since bingewatched every single other installment...even the two not-so-goods ones shiver), and i absolutely loved each second they interacted on screen,, =w= its just. so cute, and oddly sweet for the movie it is. It’s a sad shame it wasn’t too developed and all, but i still utterly love it ;w; ❤️️❣️💝💕

and finally 5. Lapidot because of course; loving Steven Universe as much as i do of course it makes it onto the list 💚💙💚💙

I remember startin to like em as a  pair waay before they were introduced to each other (because whadya know, i saw some cute arts and was hooked), but then the series progressed, Rebecca did some cute arts of em also, i just love em together and need to watch more SU

So the Lapidot Anniversary week finally began 8D !! I’m so glaaaad.

I’m sorry in advance  this post will be really long

Probably no one knows this, but I’ve been in this fandom for about 2 years, despite the fact I started watching last december -or last october if I count the firsts episodes before stopping-.

Before watching, I was just looking at fanart in my FB feed, and saw a lot of Lapidot fnarts. I was like “Oh damn they’re cute !!” and was randomly saving pictures. I was sometimes reading comments, looking at memes...To a point where I was like “But, wait. They’re together right ?”. I seriously thought they were a couple before watching.

When I was  finally watching, after Peridot’s arc I wanted her to live with everyone and was sad she decided to stay in the barn because it meant we would see her less often.

But then there was this beautiful episode called Barn Mates .

I was like “Oh wait so Lapis is gonna live here too ?! YES OMG YEEES”

Even if we wouldn’t be able to see them often, well they’d still be living together so that’s cool ?!

But then I saw how Lapis was in this episode and...kinda fet sad for Peri ? I could understant Lapis but well

I spent the episode internally yelling “PLEASE LAPIS LOOK HOW SHE’S TRYING DON’T YOU SEE SHE LIKES YOU” and kinda almost cried and melted when Peridot left because she wanted so bad to make her happy she gave up her own home (that, remember, she found first)

Then Lapis saved her and my heart almost exploded.

You see, even if it started kinda bad, well, look at how it is now. This is one of the most precious ships I’ve even been interested too.

And tbh this is not the only one that started like this, actually some ships I like/used to like sometimes started even worse and still became canon...

I could make you a list of ships I love and are a little like Lapidot and they’re all canon come on make the list complete lmao

For the first day, I didn’t really want to do some ship material, I have the whole week for this, I just wanted to...start slow y’know ? I also didn’t want to do something like a screencap redraw. So I basically made a “what happened when they finally started to live together” or something like an alternate end This may look a little off topic BUT there’s a stupid rommate story story behind this - beside the pun on the title-

For some reason one day, I don’t remember why, I thought “I’m sure Peri would play as Megaman in Smash Bros. Lapis could be Zelda and-” something then came into my mind.

One of my best friends -and ex-roommate- is a huge fan of Smash Bros (actually he’s just a Nintendo fanboy, say hi dude :3), and we spent a lot of time playing this game. A while ago my main was Zelda and one of his most used characters was Megaman.And there was 2 things that this little bastard loves to do as Megaman : either discreetly putting a bomb on me and then saying “Hey, hey, guess what ?! BOOM 8D” while I’m on fire or constantly throwing lemons because why not.

Aaaand when this memory came back just after this I felt the need to draw this

Also what makes this even funnier, is that ou respectives colors are the same :v I love blue to a point where most of my stuff is blue and, well, same for him but green.

I'm so sad :( because instead of us lapidot shippers celebrating what Lauren said in the su tags, it's just a bunch of hateful comments to why this ship is problematic and why Am///e/d/ot is better :(. Also people saying things like how Lauren did queerbaiting and that they're a terrible writer. I mean, just bc you dislike a ship, it doesn't give u the right to act like that. Sorry, I'm just sad and kinda angry. I needed to say this.

First of all, pay no attention to the haters whatsoever. 

A lot of the haters (who are claiming that Zuke “is forcing Lapidot” or “sneaking her ship into the show”) literally don’t understand how animation works.

People who are saying Lauren is “queerbaiting” are just throwing a buzzword around, without having any true understanding of what the word means.

Let’s have a look what it actually means.  To Google~

In a fannish context, queer baiting (or queerbaiting) is a term used to describe the perceived attempt by canon creators (typically of television shows) to woo queer fans and/or slash fans, but with no intention of actually showing a gay relationship being consummated on screen. 

This literally isn’t what’s going on with SU. 

Lapidot potentially happening instead of A//me/d/ot isn’t “queerbaiting” - it’s actually “I might have been wrong about a ship but I don’t want to admit it”.  It’d be “queerbaiting” if Peridot or Lapis ended up in a straight relationship after all this build up, for example - but swapping one same-sex couple for another literally isn’t what “queerbaiting” is.  Especially considering all the other same-sex couples that have been in the show - so, y’know, maybe the show doesn’t need to lure-in gay fans on a false promise of a gay relationship, given that there’s already these kinds of relationships represented in the show.

Therefore, Lauren is not queerbaiting. Fact.

If people are saying Zuke’s a “terrible writer”, that’s just their opinion.  It shouldn’t be in our tag (and it shouldn’t be written in an abusive tone or anything), but that’s Tumblr for you.

Never let the haters get you down.

Lapidot is a beautiful ship which still has every chance of becoming canon.  Don’t let these bitter, whiny pissbabies stop you from enjoying your ship. 

It’ll blow over eventually - it has done every single other time that we’ve come under attack like this.  Give it time, the trolls will get bored in the end :)

And think about this as well - we’ve potentially got another Lapidot episode coming up in a couple of weeks~  As well as the “meep morp” book and the comic and who knows what else...
